Seawalls can fail during hurricanes when [reason for failures]. Following storms, staff works with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to identify and repair damaged seawalls. This process includes procuring one or more contractors to perform the replacements and developing a work schedule.

Residents who have experienced a seawall failure should report the failure to the City. This can be done using the online form, by calling (941)575-5050, or by emailing staff. While awaiting repairs, residents can take action to stabilize erosion at their property. Information on one method is available here.

Failed Seawall Prioritization

Seawall failures were assessed by staff and prioritized for repair as follows:

  • High Priority: failed seawall and severe erosion or erosion close to structures.
  • Medium Priority: seawall standing but not functioning with some erosion observed.
  • Low Priority: seawall has minor damage but functions with little to no erosion observed.

Seawall Replacement Schedule

Hurricane Ian related seawall failures continue to be addressed. All seawall replacements in Burnt Store Isles have been completed. Punta Gorda Isles was divided into 5 work zones, with a repair schedule available for each. Please note the schedules are forward looking for the next six months, with updates made monthly.
